Steel producing company: responsible sourcing strategy and up-stream risk assessment

Support procurement and sustainability teams in enhancing the responsible sourcing program for manganese and conflict minerals and fact-finding on upstream ESG risks identified by a NGO.

The mission included:

  • Conducting internal strategy workshops and training on responsible sourcing.

  • Conducting a light gap assessment against EU/US conflict minerals legislation and Industry standards (Responsible Steel and RMI), as a basis for prioritizing ‘systems and policies’ (OECD Step 1).

  • In relation to the manganese supply chain, support the fact-checking and risk assessment at mine-site and community level in South-Africa, further to NGO matters raised. Supported outreach with (vertical) supply chain actors including traders and smelters, as well as local actors as part of due diligence risk assessment phase.

  • Provided recommendations on enhancing due diligence program, and suggested (upstream) risk mitigation actions through a dedicated stakeholder and impact programme for manganese sourcing to address issues raised by NGO’s.
