Steel producing company: responsible sourcing strategy and up-stream risk assessment
Support procurement and sustainability teams in enhancing the responsible sourcing program for manganese and conflict minerals and fact-finding on upstream ESG risks identified by a NGO.
The mission included:

Conducting internal strategy workshops and training on responsible sourcing.

Conducting a light gap assessment against EU/US conflict minerals legislation and Industry standards (Responsible Steel and RMI), as a basis for prioritizing ‘systems and policies’ (OECD Step 1).

In relation to the manganese supply chain, support the fact-checking and risk assessment at mine-site and community level in South-Africa, further to NGO matters raised. Supported outreach with (vertical) supply chain actors including traders and smelters, as well as local actors as part of due diligence risk assessment phase.

Provided recommendations on enhancing due diligence program, and suggested (upstream) risk mitigation actions through a dedicated stakeholder and impact programme for manganese sourcing to address issues raised by NGO’s.
